Almost any of the commercial products will let you create amazing music - it's mostly up to you to bring the disciple to learn the software, discipline to hone your skills, and creativity to the table. By John Walden Fruity Loops has built itself quite a cult following in dance music circles. You can also determine the amount of the specific effect per set of harmonics with various line shapes, like a slope, a curve, a sine wave or a manually drawn slope. The interface can now be scaled up massively without looking blocky or blurry. Welcome to SoundBytes Magazine, a free online magazine devoted to the subject of computer sound and music production.
The interface has been reworked and rewritten to be made vector-based. The slide speed can be controlled and the slope of the slide can be chosen as well. The sound produced in the image section will also pass through the following modules and will be discussed after. As with all Generator parameters, movement of the Mixer controls can be recorded for fully automated mixing. Turntablism made easy: the Wave Traveller Generator. And once again, you can customise these effects for the individual harmonics in the line editor of the harmonic unison pitch, giving you ultimate control.
No more band splitting of your sound patches, just do it at the synthesis stage. The spectrum view unfortunately only shows one voice the compilation of all the harmonics of that particular one , instead of the combination of all possible nine variations, this is probably due to the insane complexity that these nine combined would represent. Simply giving the option of a solid box around pattern clips in the top view would serve much the same visual purpose, and streamline the Playlist screen into one large window. A great feature that will help browse through the 458 presets and counting is the ability to sort them by type and style. It just adds that bit of extra mouse work and felt much better where it was. But you still get enough quality instruments even in the Producer version.
Patterns can be set to follow time sig changes marked on the Playlist too. These give you quick access to parameters that effect the sound the most for that particular preset. For melodic instruments, a very usable piano-roll editor is provided. In With the New The first major change is evident at a glance. What Harmor does is different, it sends commands to the additive part to manipulate the harmonic oscillators and reproduce the traditional effect. Each preset has its own set of macros.
Using the mouse a little bit to duplicate and color code Patterns in the software is also helpful. As a self-taught pianist, who later learned traditional music theory in college, he brings knowledge and understanding from both forms of education. The crazy part is the number of customizable parameters and the level of detail in which these can be edited, basically down to every 516 harmonics. Multiple time signature options for both the Playlist and individual Patterns is another welcome new feature. The channel rack now hosts the Channel Options menu, and channel settings have been integrated into the plug-in wrapper. .
Strum Strum, this is basically an arpeggio function, which instead of creating arp data, will play your midi chords as an arpeggio. You can also insert actual pictures and play them, which might sound like something cool, or you can embed your logo into sound, which looks cooler than it sounds with my logo. Several plugins are currently unavailable. Keyboard tracking: When enabled the cut-off will follow your keyboard notes and it makes sure that there are an equal amount of harmonics for each tone. You can either have them function in parallel or in series.
As the previous review is available on-line , I'll only give a brief recap of these features before looking in more detail at what has been added. Highly recommended for both new and old music creators alike! Check out the youtube videos - there's a very comprehensive first look video on the 'In The Mix' channel, for example. It will spread the harmonics around based on the set values. It encourages a work flow focused on grooves and riffs more than long recordings. The mixer, in particular, looks and feels so much more up to date than it was before, meaning that using it is a great deal more appealing.
Most of the features described in the review are present in both Fruity Loops Edition and Producer Edition, with the principal exception being the latter's audio recording facilities and wave editor. Check out the 'Modular Curiosity' youtube series if you're interested. The Fruity edition is the cheapest at 89 euros, and contains the core functionality but lacks audio capabilities and some of the more advanced plugins. Every part of the interface can be undocked and arranged, or docked with resizable borders. Overall, what you're getting with Fl Studio is a very good software that can do way more than most applications. Just make sure you book an occasional appointment with your optician if you put in long hours of use! The whole application feels more modern and easier to navigate. It's not useful for every situation or genre, but Autogun does work well as a tool for inspiration, forcing you to focus on the sound itself rather than the process of synthesis.
