The focus shifts to the crisis situation that the nurses face almost with no real help from anyone and the involvement of the Indian embassy that comes later. Midway into the film, after much thought and deliberation, Pooja decides to propose to Giri. At the end of it all, one is never sure if it's pro-conversation or anti-conversation, since it's neither here nor there. It is only after landing in Kochi Johns and Korah realise that they were set up to live and study here for a measly sum of rupees five thousand per month. Later on in the film, when Pooja hears that Giri had gone to China to train in martial arts, she imagines him having a Chinese family. And he goes even further and renders his characters voiceless in the latter half, which is indeed the biggest gamble that any film maker has attempted in recent times. We expect Divya and Das to provide the twists and turns in the story.
He just tries to show how mundane the job of a sub inspector of police is. It seems that the director has taken particular care not to do away with the comic streak throughout. Pooja is the daughter of a professor and a doctor, the white collared family that fits neatly into the mould of the bourgeoisie. He does raise his voice in front of petty politicians and applies third degree measures on seasoned criminals and drug peddlers without leaving a mark on their bodies for the medical examiners or the Judges to detect. Cowed, her father gestures to her to carry on. Varathan is a clear indication that Kerala's young filmmakers want to engage with the subject of sexual assault seriously.
It isn't the most pleasant of times, what with a mysterious illness called H10N10 wreaking havoc on public lives. There are interactions with people who come and go—a small-time political leader, a group of bikers in a toddy shop… Fahadh has yet another winner in North 24 Kaatham. And then the experimental bit is thrown at us -as Balaji Mohan presses the Mute button, everything and everyone around springs into actor mode, with a non-intrusive musical score blowing away in the background. Aju is a rebel without a cause, product of a broken home. He is a crusader for justice, a martial arts expert, social reformer and what have you. It's about three cousins in their twenties, who dream of taking off for Bangalore and having a blast when they grow up.
Achane kaal kaipunyam ulloru doctor allengil athilum mele ethaan ulla oru aalaanu nee. Swati, who was his co-star in the recent hit Amen, makes her presences felt here too. Giri: Beetle-browed and sexy, Giri is almost caricaturishly macho. Kuttan is a simple soul who would have happily looked after his father's farm, but becomes a software engineer and takes up a job in a new city because of his mother. It should be mentioned that the several sub-plots that take up a major chunk of the running time are feebly written, and ultimately fail to deliver the goods.
North 24 Kaatham is an endearing film and a sure winner for Fahadh Faasil as the leading man and Anil as a debutant director. For example, when Pooja asks her cousin David Kanjani Aju Varghese what his problem with Giri is, he answers her question with an analogy: the one in which he and Giri are on a battlefield and he steps on a mine. While thankfully, the camera here doesn't want to titillate the viewer we are not subjected to any bathing scenes or others of a similar nature , its positioning from the voyeur's angle makes even an innocuous activity such as Priya licking chocolate syrup off her hand while baking seem like more than it actually is. But, surprisingly, the story is not a romantic one in the conventional sense. Surprisingly, all the major issues on show are solved when silence prevails. On the other hand, it's all over the place. If we look at the story, it is a tad repetitive in the first half where he is seen talking to people sitting in his office providing solutions to their myriad problems, whether its a domestic problem like a messy extra-marital affair or school kids entangled in the web of drug mafia.
Among the highlights of the film are its spectacular performances. The film is about the interplay between these three main characters. Very soon, the entire population is petrified when research proves that the disease spreads through conversation, leading the government to impose a speech ban in the hamlet. Parvathi plays this motivating character, but one feels she would have been more credible if she had shown moments of pain or dejection. He has a fear of travelling in general, and flying in particular. Parvathy once again proves what an amazingly talented actor she is. All those 80s and 90s and 00s references: In the pre-cellphone era, love was carried out differently.
This leads to some spoofing of the film Thattathin Marayathu where the two were the lead pair, and some light-hearted comedy. Harinarayan reluctantly embarks on a journey to Thiruvananthapuram by train to make a presentation about a software he has helped develop. Enthinu adhikam, Tsunami vare vannu. Krishnan aka Kuttan Nivin Pauly , Arjun aka Aju Dulquer Salmaan and Divya Nazriya Nazim realise their childhood dream in an unusual manner. The film explores how Priya and her Varathan outsider husband are drawn into a deadly game of hostility, violence, suspense tension. As with any teenager in the throes of an infatuation, she turns into a schemer whose sole agenda is to be with the object of her affection.

Kuttan, who was shocked to see couples getting intimate in public, initially falls for a traditional looking sari-clad air-hostess Meenakshi Isha Talwar. Sanity after decades of rom-coms in which teenage heroines are successfully wooed by heroes twice their age and forced to choose domesticity over careers. Here is a big round of applause for the sincerity with which this film has been written and presented. Like many a viewer out there, I had developed a special liking for what the film was trying to put across in the former half - that a talkative mouth often inadvertently serves as a devil's den.
